Natural Does Not Imply “Good”

When we say that something is natural we imply that it is unavoidable, that it is a good thing, that it is positive, that it is how it should be. When in fact, we do not agree in a lot of things with nature. We wear clothes, live in houses, have a tremendous amount of things, have changed our environment to the point of nearly destroying it and even do not respect our natural limitations by flying. We cure people when they are sick instead of letting them to be eaten by other animals, we help those with physical disabilities, we even find ways to help those with allergies. We fight nature on everything. We do not agree with nature at a moral level, nature is cruel and senseless.

We need to stop using and challenge those who do use the word natural to imply, as I said above, the way things should be, that something is good because of it, correct or unavoidable and instead bring our own morality, our reason and intelligence to assess whether something is morally acceptable or not. Social issues must be judged from a moral point of view, because when they are found to not be immoral, or morally acceptable, then they are a matter of opinion. Otherwise they are not, that is, something that is slightly morally wrong, is still morally wrong.

Something may indeed be natural, yet, this is not a reason to go ahead with it. That is, we are born without fur so we wear clothes. The natural argument is often used when it comes to social issues to defend the way of the world in support of the status quo. Indeed I do believe that some of our challenges as a society have evolved from very simple and deeply rooted elements in nature. Natural elements become complex social structures in a society. Such elements include things like fear, greed and a need to gather resources.

I do view nature as a positive thing. Humans are part of nature. Is there such thing as unnatural, can there be? Every being and everything is part of nature. This everything that is created is part of nature, if an animal creates something we still call it natural, we don’t think of it that way if a human creates something. This is not to say that destroying our environment is acceptable or that our diets or lifestyles are okay. There are of course numerous things that are part of our nature that we do need and we do need to consider what is something that we agree on with nature and what is something we do not agree on. That is, drinking a good amount of water daily is natural, consuming greats amounts of sugar we could call unnatural because we would not find such tremendous amount in our natural state and it would be negative. This is where we need to apply common sense and make use of the expertise that humanity has gained throughout our history.
